As far as I know of all of this, and as a good starter I thought I'd go ahead and list the supposed predicitons of the 2012 situation:

1. There have been three or four previous races and ages of humanity (depending upon the source you read).  All of these have been destroyed in major cataclysms.  December 21.2012 marks the end of this age and it will end in major catastrophes such as Earthquakes.

2. For half of the katun (20 year Mayan cycle) there will be food, for half some misfortunes. This katun brings the end of the "word of God." It is a time of uniting for a cause.

3. As we pass through transition there is a colossal, global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war and ongoing Earth changes.

4.  The Earth will undergo a magnetic field shift, reversing the polarity of the planet.

5.  An asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth.

There is much more than this as well and further explanations and such....but basically, they Mayans made their calendar to last no longer than the year 2012....December 12 of the year 2012.  What was their motivation in this?  Did they think that their civilization would make another calendar before that year?  Are they actually predicting doomsday or what?

Could you list some links for further readings on these predictions? (I understand that in the context of a single forum post we can't be much more thorough than a brief summary like this.)

I always figured that, what with stone disks not being infinite, one could only codify so much time on it before running out of space. As Y2K was to us, so was 2012 to them - an appropriate place to stop counting before "turning the page", and, as such, a time when great changes could be expected. I suspect they were much more forward-looking than we, since they fit more thousands of years into their calendar than we did into our pre-Y2K computers.

I think there's a certain self-fulfilling aspect to Years Of Great Change; our collective act of assigning meaning to such years cannot help but prod us toward making Great Change happen. We get... cataclysm-minded, I think.

Understand all of this is just me speculating, though.

so far i think us analyzing these predictions is as random as counting rain drops in a snow storm. you give any number you want and it would be hard for anyone to challenge it. i do personally believe there will be a major change. but have no clue what it will be. *off to wikipedia for some more info* be right back

I tend to believe that the changes will be mostly on a spiritual level, as the year 2012 also predicts that our Collective Consciousness will be reaching new heights.  Thus, whether or not there are physical changes involved, I am convinced that the dire consequences that are currently being announced could be avoided if we all focus on the more positive aspects of our existence.

i agree, but i think it could go either way, negative or positive. one thing for sure is when it comes to this the smartest prediction we can make is that none of us are exactly right.

Very true...Nevertheless, I think we owe it to ourselves to envision the best outcome.  These are the wonderful times we are living in, and I can't help but believing that it will only get better.

i hope your right , and i believe you are. a positive change is in need and way over due. the possibilities are endless if you really think about it.

There is also information about sun energy and how 2012 is predicted to be the high point in the sun's cyclical energy.  The research suggests that the last few years have been the low point in the suns energy cycle, but the energy levels have nevertheless been at all time highs.  So the prediction is that the high will be catastrophic.  Sun energy is associated with natural disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, etc.....

I don't really put much into those predictions from people who ceased to exist. If they were so good at making predictions you would think they would have done a little better for themselves. Could a meteor hit the Earth, sure, will it be on Dec 21, 2012? Better chances of winning the lottery. I am sure the Earth changes, some call it global warming, but it does what it does. I am not all freaked out by any doomsday predictions, more so by the people who buy into it and thus cause bad things to happen.

thanks for all of this information..got no time to research this things ,,since i know it will only make us fear of something .. we really cant predict the future..i guess the best thing to do is pray and live life to the fullest ..since we really will never know when or where it will happen.. not really sure on their motives(the Mayans)

What's so wonderful about war and billions of people in the world who are living in extreme poverty and starving?
