fuzoid: Your observations regarding "fleeing to Egypt" and the "slaughter of the innocents" is absolutely correct. The Gospels are full of contradictions and inconsistencies.

Here is quick one. Matthew 26:15 says they "weighed out 30 pieces of silver" to pay Judas. The problem is, using pieces of silver as currency had gone out of practice 300 years before. Well documented Roman history tells us that in the time of Jesus minted coins were used. There is more to this story, but you get the point.

For one to accept the Bible as the unerring word of God one has to make a huge leap of faith. Too huge for me, and by all indications, too huge for you. You have used your powers of reason, your intellect. This is a good thing. A very good thing

Both Matthew and Luke give geneologies for Joseph (Matthew 1:2-17, Luke 3:23-38). Both show that he was a direct descendant of King David. Nowhere does the bible mention Mary's or any other female geneology. Paul says in Romans 1:3 that Jesus "was born of the seed of David" which was necessary and required for the Messiah. If Joseph's lineage goes back to King David and that lineage is required for Jesus to be the Messiah, then Joseph would have to be the father of Jesus. Not the stepfather or the adoptive father, the actual father. This is the requirement of Messianic law.

But then we are told that Jesus was born of a virgin chosen by God. No mention of King David or lineage back to him by Mary or any other woman.

I think we have a problem.
